Editing your site

Your Phew! website will be built with WordPress, the world's best-loved content management system. That means that you'll be able to edit and manage your site yourself – which means freedom! No relying on web designers to handle every little update – you're completely self-reliant.

WordPress is incredibly easy to use, and to make things even easier, the website package comes with access to a special members' site where you can watch detailed, step-by-step video tutorials which I've created. They show you how to do everything you need, from logging in onwards.

Here are some of the things you can do with WordPress:

Add, delete and move pages

You can create as many pages as you like, and arrange them in the menu in any order. You can also write draft pages – you don't have to publish a page till you're happy with it.

Style your text

You can style your text much as you would in a program like Word – for example, making it bold or italic with a simple click of a button.

  • You can have bulleted lists (or numbered ones)
    • And you can nest them too
      • Multiple times, if you like
  • Lists are very useful for making content digestible
  • Because on screen, large blocks of text can be quite hard to read

And headings, of course

Which are also great for breaking the page down into manageable chunks, and helping your visitors find the bit of information they're looking for.

And blockquotes, which are great for quotes or testimonials. Ahem. I wandered lonely as a cloud which floats on high o'er vale and hill, when all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils.

Post photos, audio and video

You can have a caption, if you like.

You can add photos at any point on a page, and as many as you like. Here's a photo I took at the Hurlers, on Bodmin Moor.

WordPress lets you choose what size to show the image, and whether to put it on the left or right.

You can even make a gallery of photos – WordPress creates the thumbnail images for you and links them to the full size images.

Audio

I set up your website with various useful plugins, including one that lets you add cute little audio players to your site (you can even change the player's colours). Here's a nice bit of Jason Mraz for you:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Or you can post it as a simple text link, like this: Jason Mraz, I'm Yours.

Video

You can upload videos to WordPress, but actually it's usually a much better idea to host your videos on a community site like YouTube or Vimeo – it saves your bandwidth, and brings you new visitors.

So, the website package also comes with a handy plugin that makes it super-easy for you to add videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and nine other popular video sites – no messing about with code. You can even set custom colours, size, and other settings for the player. Here's old Jason Mraz again.
